§ 3.5. Vice-Mayor; acting mayor.

  • The Governing Body shall biennially, at its first regular meeting in January following the municipal election, choose one of its members as vice-mayor. The vice-mayor shall perform the duties of Mayor during the Mayor's absence or disability. In the event of the death, removal or resignation of the Mayor, the vacancy shall be filled in accordance with general law.

    Should a member of City Council be chosen to serve as Mayor until the next municipal election, such City Council seat will be deemed to be vacant upon qualification of the former City Council member as Mayor. The vacancy thereby created in the City Council shall be filled by the Governing Body as provided in this charter.

    The member of the City Council who shall be chosen as vice-mayor shall continue to have all rights, privileges, powers, duties and obligations as a member of the Governing Body while performing the duties of Mayor in the absence or disability of the Mayor of the City.
